孝顺的女儿

1979年4月，邓丽君首次在美国旧金山及洛杉矶、加拿大温哥华举行北美巡回演唱会。第二年夏天，她举办了第二次北美巡演，熟练地用日语、英语、粤语、国语与观众交流，演唱会吸引了大批旅居美国和加拿大的华侨华人以及美国人，往往是第一场演出还没开始，第二场的门票就已售完。
邓长禧说：“我对老姐有一份别人不易体会的尊敬，在甜美的歌声和笑容后面能看到她那满腔力争上游的志气……十余年不是一个短暂的日子，我深深相信，没有平常一点一滴的努力，我老姐在歌唱方面不会有今天的成就。很多事情都不是天上掉下来的。”
不变的气节
幼时的清贫和磨难，让邓丽君在长大成名后常存感恩之心。她经常参加慰问活动，即使在“半隐退”期间，也从不缺席义演。她以谦和待人、勤勉自持的形象，成为台湾人心中的“义演皇后”。
1969年12月，应香港白花油药厂董事长颜玉莹之邀，邓丽君参加《华侨日报》发起的“救童助学”义卖活动。在香港工展会上，她登高一呼就募到了5150元港币，成为当年慈善义卖的“白花油皇后”。
“邓丽君文教基金会”的工作人员尹华芳回忆，邓丽君往往以无名氏的名义捐款给各地的慈善机构。“小姐的乐善好施，对家人也是一样的无微不至。小姐无论买什么东西给自己，例必会买两件，另一件送给妈妈，与她分享。”
邓丽君生前遇到过一位“真命天子”，那就是香格里拉集团的董事长郭孔丞。郭孔丞比邓丽君大6岁，两人相识后很快陷入热恋。1981年，邓丽君举办订婚发布会。她生前的友人回忆说：“那是邓丽君最甜蜜幸福的一段日子，她对这段感情非常认真。”
然而，就在喜帖和婚纱都已准备完毕的时候，突然发生了变故。郭孔丞带邓丽君回新加坡家中拜见长辈，郭孔丞的祖母向邓丽君提出了3个苛刻的条件：一是要邓丽君拿出详细的身家资料；二是要她终止所有演艺活动，专心做家庭主妇；三是要求她必须和演艺界断绝来往，并与所有男性友人划清界线。
邓长禧后来在接受采访时透露，实际上，当时邓丽君已决定婚后退出演艺圈。但她听到郭孔丞转述祖母的要求时，感到十分屈辱，摸着订婚戒指，泪流满面。最终，邓丽君毅然退婚，与郭孔丞分道扬镳。
在日本的5年间，邓丽君虽得奖无数，却始终不喜欢这个国家。很多倾慕她的日本男子，都被她拒之门外。尽管条件很便利，但她一直没办日本护照，也不购置日本房产。她说：“我在日本一般不碰日本货。我买的是一辆德国金龟车，不但没有冷气，还是手排档。同样的价钱买日本车，不知道能换一辆多新式的呢！好多人都笑我傻，其实他们哪儿知道我心里的意思。或许是由于某些民族情结吧，老实说，我讨厌日本，我唯一做的，就是在日本努力赚他们的钱，然后汇回老家。”
邓丽君去世后，台湾当局将她定位为“爱国艺人”，因为她始终牢记自己是一个中国人
