用hyphen（连字符 “—”）可以连接两个词构成新词。
如 toughly-charactered (性格坚韧）
按照构词法，副词可以修饰分词，这里就用副词toughly修饰分词charactered，例句：He is toughly-charactered, endowed with swift thoughts and possessing a down-to-earth spirit.(他性格坚韧，拥有敏捷的思维和坚持到底的精神。）
再如 man-eater （食人者）
rubbish-maker(垃圾制造者）
这是名词相互修饰的例子，例句如下
She is really a man-eater. (她简直就是个食人族。）
We cannot become rubbish-makers, destroying our homeland. （我们不能成为垃圾制造者，破坏我们的家园。）
